About this Panel

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for blood clotting. It plays an important role in building and maintaining strong bones as well as reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin K is synthesised by plants and high levels can be found in green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and kale. We also measure PIVKA-II, which is a functional marker used alongside vitamin K to give an indication of vitamin K status usage. Please note that PIVKA-II levels can be elevated independently of vitamin K deficiency, for example in patients taking warfarin.

Vitamin K plays an important role in blood coagulation, bone health and vascular health. For this test we measure and report serum vitamin K1 levels.

Elevated levels of PIVKA-II in the blood can indicate deficiency of vitamin K1. For this test we measure and report undercarboxylated prothrombin levels (PIVKA-II).

Who is this panel for?

Our vitamin K blood test panel is for anyone interested in their vitamin K levels or worried about vitamin K deficiency. Symptoms of vitamin K deficiency include excessive bleeding from wounds, mucosal bleeding, easy bruising, low bone density, heavy menstrual periods, gastrointestinal bleeding and blood in the urine and/or stool.

While vitamin K deficiency is rare, it is more prevalent in individuals who suffer from chronic malnutrition, conditions that cause prolonged intestinal malabsorption of fat (e.g. coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s disease, biliary obstruction), or are on long-term antibiotic therapies. Vitamin K status is especially important for those who suffer from cardiovascular disease or are at risk of bone loss.

* Turnaround time measured from when blood sample is accepted in to the Viapath laboratory and does not include weekends or bank holidays.
